South Pond Engagement Session in Chicago | Charlotte and Stephen

They say that when you live in Chicago, if you don’t like the weather- just wait a minute. That couldn’t have felt more true during Charlotte and Stephen’s engagement session. After chatting through their favorite local spots, we landed on two iconic places: North Avenue Beach and the Lincoln Park Nature Boardwalk, which just happens to be right across the street from their home. Ironically, I had just photographed a similar route two nights earlier with another couple, but the light, the vibe, and the laughs were completely different. That’s what I love about photographing in Chicago, the city changes by the day, and no two sessions ever feel the same.

Starting at the Shoreline

We kicked off the evening at the lake, and Chicago gave us a break with sunshine peeking through the skyline at North Avenue Beach. Charlotte arrived in a stunning white dress from French Connection via Nordstrom, and both of their outfits looked straight out of a style guide. This was my first time hanging out with them, and within minutes, I completely understood why Charlotte was marrying Stephen. She said it best: “His heart is so pure, he’s full of energy, loves to play, and knows how to make me laugh.” It was true throughout the entire session. The giggling was nonstop.

After a shared glass of champagne, Charlotte and Stephen did a quick outfit change at the nearby bathrooms, then we hopped into an Uber to catch the last of the daylight.

Lincoln Park, Home and Heart

Lincoln Park is more than just a pretty backdrop for these two- it’s home. Not only do they live across the street, but they’ve spent countless evenings walking its trails and ponds. It was the perfect place to wrap up their engagement session, especially since Stephen proposed at the North Pond, just steps away. After years of gazing at the North Pond restaurant and dreaming of dining there, they finally went for it right before their 5th anniversary. Stephen had secretly planned the whole evening, popping the question before dessert. The night ended with a surprise rooftop celebration, with both of their families waiting to toast the newly engaged couple.

Looking Ahead to Their Wedding at City View Loft

We wrapped our session just as the light faded behind the skyline, but this story isn’t over yet. Before their wedding at City View Loft, an urban gem in the heart of Chicago, we’ll be back in Lincoln Park once more. That’s where Stephen will see Charlotte for the first time on their wedding day. I can’t wait to witness that moment and continue telling their story.
