Brainard Lake Recreation Area Engagement Session in Boulder, Co | Carla and John
Brainard Lake Recreation Area in Boulder, Colorado is one of my favorite places for engagement photos, and it turns out Carla and John agree! Especially when you have a stunning Siberian Husky named Akira and a love of dog kisses. While Brainard Lake is the popular go-to, we decided to venture past it and photograph at Long Lake, its quieter sibling. Long Lake offers the same alpine beauty with fewer crowds, making it the perfect setting for their Colorado mountain engagement session.
Part of the Indian Peaks Wilderness in north central Colorado, this stretch of alpine lakes (including Lake Isabelle and Isabelle Glacier) is full of dramatic backdrops, hiking trails, and serene mountain vibes. Even in the summer, there’s something so magical about these lakeside trails.
From Teenage Sweethearts to Alpine Adventures
Carla and John first met as teenagers in Virginia and later moved to Colorado in 2019. When John proposed at St. Mary’s Glacier, we knew we had to find a location just as jaw-dropping for their engagement photos. Long Lake fit the bill—alpine views, accessible trails, and, importantly, outside any of the current Colorado fire evacuation zones.
As we hiked and explored, these two shared stories, snuggled with Akira, and debated the latest horror movie Netflix misstep (truly, I could’ve talked to them about movies for hours). Their joy for Colorado life is contagious, and I’m so glad they chose to put down roots—and trails—here.
Why Long Lake Is a Hidden Gem for Engagement Sessions
I always encourage couples to explore new places, and Long Lake was such a refreshing change from the usual Rocky Mountain spots. The short hike from Brainard Lake offers such a payoff: peaceful mountain views, crisp alpine air, and the freedom to make the session truly your own.
Also, let’s be honest, Akira totally stole the show. From cuddles to kisses to posing like a pro, she proved again why dogs in engagement sessions are always a good idea.
